What's the best way to transfer photos from iPhone 4s to PC?

May 3, 2012

Hi there,

Does anyone know if it's possible to move photos in bulk from iPhone 4s to a computer and how?

A google search has shown some ways (and even specialized software) to do that with older iPhones, but nothing for 4s.

Any ideas welcome and TIA.

Do you have a Windows or a Mac computer?

With Windows, when you connect the iPhone, it'll be recognized as a camera, which means you can use Windows' apps to mass-transfer allready-shot images.

With OS X, use the built-in "Image Capture" app (it's under Applications and need to be manually started) for mass-copying.

Under both OS'es, you can also use third-party apps like iExplorer / Phone Disk to directly access the Media/DCIM directory in the file system but they're considerably slower than the above methods.

Thank you, Menneisyys

Windows (Windows 7), but all I seem to get is an empty DCIM folder, although the computer sees a few gigabytes of stuff on the iPhone "drive." I can see the 17 hundred-plus images on the iProduct, with few "file management" options.

I have tried making hidden files and folders visible through the Tools - Folder Options, which didn't help.

Does the way you're suggesting still work on a 4s? Do you think there're some settings in the phone I should change to make the jpegs "visible" in Windows Explorer?

See page 78 of the iPhone User Guide (bookmarked in Safari on your iPhone 4S).
"Uploading photos and videos to your computer".

I don't use Windows, but it sounds like you could do this using whatever basic photo viewer software comes on your PC.

The process is quite easy to do. You need the Photo Transfer App. Works great, and I use it with with my 4S and New iPad to move photos back and forth from my PC with Windows 8

Besides using the above ways to transfer photos from iPhone 4S to PC, you can also try to use other methods. More ways for transferring photos from iPhone to PC could be searched on your internet browsers.

I am using a Windows system on my computer, so I only need to plug in iPhone to computer and transfer photos directly.

Why not use the Apple/iCloud built in PhotoStream capability? Within a few minutes of your iPhone being on a wifi network, your photos will already be on your PC, and if you have them, your iPad, Mac, AppleTV etc.

Use Bluetooth????

In reply to verbiage • Aug 19, 2012

Love being able to beam pics to and from my computer without plugging in USB (which activates charging I don't want or need) with Bluetooth.

So easy just single or multi-select send via Bluetooth and it's done. Bam. I'm using Nokia 808. Also nice for quick songs and ringtones or anything else I happen accross and download daily on my PC.

Surely the i-phone with it's RETINA display has this common technology; it's not new or anything.

If you have set up iCloud well on your iPhone and computer, the photos you have taken will appear on all your devices in a flash. You don't need to use any USB cable to transfer pictures from iPhone 4S to PC.

BTW, using USB cable and iPhone to PC software, you can also finish the task.

Assuming that you're using Windows 7 or Vista. Just follow these steps: Connect your phone to PC using USB cable, wait for auto-play option and and there you will find Import pictures and videos option. Input tag names if you want and then click on import pictures, that's it! You can try third party tools also for this.

Hope it helps!

I hesitated in replying to this now as the thread is of course months old and as such it is likely to have little if any interest to the original writers..

But it IS a topic that is indeed still relevant for many..so I just throw in here the fact that after I got an iPhone4 recently, I was equally interested in the general manner of swaping pics, Vids etc to/from my iPhone and computer...you know how iTunes CAN make a lot of difficulties in doing such things...

The answer.. easy.. I found the program "ImTOO Phone Transfer"...one of very many that are by the makers...but it is so relatively cheap..and SO efficient in what and how it does this...that quite honestly I would seriously recommend ANY iPhone user to look at. It does it all.. SO easily...
http://www.imtoo.com/iphone-transfer.html

Quite literally - you just open the program, connect your phone... and do anything you want to/from anywhere...

Too easy:

Plug you iphone to the USB port of your computer.
Auto play should show up.

Click on: My Computer> iPhone icon> Internal storage> DCIM then click on any of the folders. Voila

May be too easy for you... but it just doesn't work like that for me !!

Plug n the phone and in WinExporer all it gives ME is a folder (no sub-folders) named "Eric's iPhone".. and in that is ONLY the photos in Camera Roll on the iPhone...NO others.. and all that are shown are as .png type..

ImTOO program gives me a FULL and COMPETE listing of EVERYTHING on my iPhone...AND lets me transfer to/from, with absolute ease and clarity.
You get what you PAY for.. and in this case..it is what I WANT... absolutely..

I don't get it my iphone 4 shows the DCIM folder and when I clikc I see two folders.

When I plug my phone it shows up in the portable device group, I click on it, internal storage shows up and when I click again I get DCIM and when I click again I get two folders: 823WGTMA & 8600KM20, both of them contain all my photos.
Don't ask me what the names of the folders mean, I don't have a clue.
My phone is not jailbroken.

I do understand fully what you are saying.. and in many ways it is as much a mystery to me... with just about all else I may plug into my laptop I do usually get more or less a similar sort of result if viewing it in WinExplorer... but certainly not with my iPhone4.

My phone is not jailbroken either - I know what that means but neither have a clue as to how it's done nor indeed do I WANT it done..

The only last thing I can perhaps think of..what computer system are you on?...I stick firmly to the XP SP3 that truly fills all my needs...I've got a Win7 laptop which I regard as a spare standby (Present Sony XP is now just over 3 years old but still keeps me fully satisfied and I love the old Classic type display I've always had with it.. (oddly I changed my Win7 to "Classic Style" once I'd set it up ..then changed back to what Win7 was giving me in my setup !! .. as I liked it )...

But the XP is the only thing that makes possible sense as to why I don't get the iPhone listed... IF it does that maybe with another system.

However..this ImTOO prog really is SO good and does everything I want SO well.. that I still feel it suits me more than anything else I could use. I got it in one of their cheap sales and it's been worth every penny...

When I plug in the 4s to my pc, I simply open the folder containing the photos in Windows Explorer.  From there I can copy & paste to whereever I want.

It is possible to view your media without any third party applications? Wow, I thought PhoneStick was doing that for me. Is it possible to view your PDFs that way?

Unless things have changed, Apple only exposes the photo folder to Explorer - for anything else, you need special software.
